Set in the beautiful rolling hills at the northern edge of the Cotswolds, Cherwell District Council serves a population of more than 150,000 people. But while the landscape may be picturesque, life here is not without its challenges.

We have a complex mix of urban communities and high levels of deprivation that that are often hidden from the wider world. Cherwell, however, is a bold and ambitious Council, with a strong track record of delivering strategic programmes and initiatives to tackle these challenges head on.

In this key role, that sits within our Communities directorate, you'll inspire Council colleagues to engage with new technologies, embrace new ways of thinking, adopt new ways of working, and help us overcome what is arguably our greatest challenge of all.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead, review and develop the Council's response to the challenges presented by climate change, including the development of policy and strategy across all Council Services.
  • Build strong relationships with external partners, including other councils, Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership and the Oxfordshire Greentech network.
  • Deliver – either directly or by partnering with or commissioning others – a range of projects that support the Council's climate change objectives.
  • Provide sustainability expertise to the Council's Planning Policy team in its review of the Cherwell Local Plan and contribution to the wider Oxfordshire Plan.

To rise to the challenge, you'll need a rather special set of qualities. Professional capabilities and practical experience are obviously important. But so too are the personal attributes you bring to the role.

Key requirements:

  • A relevant degree and plenty of real-world experience in an environmental field such as energy management or energy efficiency.
  • A deep understanding of environmental issues, energy efficiency techniques and principles, and the policies – particularly around low carbon planning –that steer energy projects in the public sector.
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering and managing sustainability projects, with a particular emphasis on managing stakeholders, controlling budgets and securing external funding.
  • A creative and inventive approach to sustainability. A flair for pulling together information and resources from different areas and using them to create solutions that work.
