Durham is one the largest local authorities in the country, serving a county of nearly 527,000 people. Democratic process is the beating heart of the council. That’s why, as Democratic Services Manager, you’ll have such an important role if you join our ambitious team. Leading dedicated professionals, you’ll shape tomorrow’s democratic process and make sure it runs smoothly.
As Democratic Services Manager, you’ll have scope to make an impact, advise at the highest levels and bring continuous improvement. Leading Democratic Services (Elections, Committee Services, Scrutiny, Member Support and Civic Office), you’ll provide strategic leadership for a 40-strong team. Together, you’ll tackle key projects such as the preparation of council proposals on council size and warding patterns, which will be submitted as part of the Local Government Boundary Commission Review.
Other key responsibilities will include overseeing the implementation of the Elections Act 2022, the delivery of Council meetings and our Member Development Programme. You’ll also act as Statutory Scrutiny Officer and the Deputy Returning Officer at elections.
This varied remit demands a particular type of leader: pragmatic, positive and proactive, with the energy to learn quickly. Along with plenty of drive, you’ll need an administrative qualification (full ICSA, degree or NVQ level 5) and preferably experience at a senior level in Democratic Services. However, it’s your ability to connect and communicate that will make all the difference.
