Environmental Health Officer – Private Sector Housing
£39,493 - £46,549 per year
Exmouth/Honiton
Full time (37 hours per week) with a range of flexibilities, including hybrid working, aligned to our Worksmart arrangements
Permanent
About the role:
In East Devon, we strive to keep our residents safe and well. We think their homes are at the core of this. As a committed and professional Environmental Health Officer, you’ll be at the forefront of our work supporting our corporate priority of better homes and communities.
Your main task will be to ensure that private sector housing is fit for tenants and meeting national standards. You’ll carry out inspections, look into complaints, undertake enforcement and give expert advice.
With a wide range of investigations, there’ll be something different every day: improving indoor air quality; enabling energy efficiency; bringing empty properties back into use. You’ll also help to keep caravan sites safe and support residents in self-neglect and hoarding situations. You’ll therefore be making a positive impact in many far-reaching ways.
Join us, and you’ll help to reduce the burden on the NHS, combat fuel poverty and climate change, and create a greener region. East Devon may be a small district, but we have big ambitions.
This post is politically restricted.
About you:
A qualified Environmental Health Officer, you specialise in Housing and Public Health. You have proven experience of investigating and enforcing housing standards in the private sector, plus a degree (or equivalent) related to Environmental Health.
Your expertise covers licensing and enforcement in multiple occupation properties, indoor air quality and fuel poverty issues. Good with people, you express yourself well to engage with landlords; residents and other Council services and stakeholders.
Crucially, you also have the organisational skills to manage investigations, enforcement and prosecutions. Please note that you will be visiting residents in their homes, so a valid driving licence and suitable transport are essential (reasonable adjustments may be possible).
About us:
In return, you will be part of a Platinum Investors in People (IiP) organisation which works together with local people to create great value services and an outstanding community, economy and environment in which people want to live, work, visit and enjoy now, and for future generations. And with our wide range of health and wellbeing benefits, our highly flexible and collaborative hybrid Worksmart working arrangements as well as our commitment to continuous learning and development, you can be confident of joining a dedicated community of colleagues who are Happy, Healthy and Here.
